Odd Future gets a deal

Yes it's true. The OFWGKTA clique is now signed to a record label...Odd Future Records. While I am disappointed they didn't branch out to a major label and get the support the deserve, I understand why they didn't.

1. They want creative control: Anyone who has listened to any member of OF knows that the are very unique artists. You have Earl and Tyler who are the two most brash of the group, and have rapped about rape, murder, and doing cocaine among other things. Tyler started OF from nothing (he says it was just something he made up when he was 15), and he doesn't want to see it get destroyed by a major label. Take Lupe Fiasco's latest album Lasers. By his own admission, Lupe says his record label, Atlantic, told him to "dumb down" his raps so the general public would understand them better and the album's sale would increase. Tyler couldn't care less about his record sales (or so he says). He just wants to make his music.

2.They have seen that a major label ignores some artists: OF member Frank Ocean was signed to deal with Island Def Jam. He tried to put out music, but the company ignored all his requests. Eventually he just said screw it, and released his debut album Nostalgia, Ultra completely independent of Def Jam. As of right now, it is a top 5 contender for album of the year. Tyler doesn't want to see OF get swept under the rug, he want it to flourish.

Tyler, the Creator's second album, Goblin, comes out May 11th. Preorder the deluxe version on iTunes or amazon.com. I've had mine preordered the first day it was possible. Check out http://oddfuture.com/musics for the full OFWGKTA discography.
